30 New Things: Get a pedicure

I know, I’m probably the only 25 year old girl in the Western world who has never had a pedicure. On top of that I’ve probably only had a manicure about once. Now, this does not mean that I have craptastic nails. In fact, they are quite nice. It just means that I’m poor and that I really don’t care to pay for something I can do just as well myself.

I should also mention that while I enjoy the look of having my nails painted, I loathe the fact that they tend to chip within a matter of hours. This is mostly likely do to the fact that I’m hard on my hands: I swim, I garden, I spray paint, I do all sorts of things that are not conducive to maintaining manicures of any sort. Once the first chip becomes apparent I must then take all of the nail polish off in order to satisfy my OCD. Assuming chipping is inevitable occurrence I just solve the problem by not polishing my nails to begin with.

So it was with great trepidation that I went and got a mani/pedi with my mother. I would also like to say that I have a strong dislike for the phrase “mani/pedi” as it sounds superficial and ridiculous to me. But I did it anyway. The process itself was quite enjoyable and I’m definitely not one to turn down a foot and hand massage…but the experience left me a little wanting. The girl did a decent job…but I didn’t see how my toes looked any better than when I give myself a pedicure. Not to mention that my nails chipped within 24 hours…again, just like home, except I had spent a lot more money than usual for my chipped nails.

So in conclusion: I enjoy the massage and prep part of the mani/pedi but I wasn’t impressed with the actual longevity of said polish. Thus, I think I’ll stick to my at home spa and save my pennies for massages rather than pedicures.

P.S. those aren’t my toes in the photo. My toes are decent looking, I just didn’t feel like taking a photo.

i completely agree with you on the mani-pedi thing. i just turned 26, and i also got my first pedicure when i was 25. it is soo expensive, dont like wearing nail polish in the first place…i just dont get the point. for me it’s all about the massage aspect, but at that point i might as well just go get a full body massage and tell them to stop by my feet for a few minutes! :P at least you got to finish one thing on your list! i’m still plugging away at mine!

    • Really, I think the massage is all I’m there for – and considering that a mani/pedi costs the same as an hour massage…there’s really no question in my mind as to where I’m going to be spending my money from now on!

I’m really struggling to get things on my list done too, but I’ve resolved to try and do 1 a week from now on – which I more or less have to do if I want to finish by this year!
