30 New Things: Join One New Club at School

WHoooa, I actually joined two new clubs, so maybe I get bonus points for that? I’ve joined the sailing club to, of course, learn how to sail, and the Judo club to learn how to kick ass. Or as my friend Kevin put it, to become even more deadly than I was before. I’m somewhat skeptical of his assessment of the situation, but I’ve decided it’s a compliment. I’m thinking both skills will be useful in obtaining my PhD. After all, what pirate doesn’t know how to sail? Similarly, judo may help me survive doing a study on piracy…

Unfortunately, do to scheduling nonsense, and by that I mean having to grade somewhere around 100 papers, I haven’t actually gotten to go sailing. Instead I just hang around and tie knots and try and remember the names for different parts of the boat. When I was in New Zealand, Julia and I spent a day sailing around the Bay of Islands. It was pretty amazing and chatting with the Captain was extremely entertaining. His kids had been raised on the sailboat, and spent most of their life sailing around the world and taking correspondence classes until they went to college. I think that sounds rather fantastic and very Pippi Longstocking like, and I’m more than a little jealous.

So the club that I’m actually doing stuff in is the Judo club. Unfortunately, and I fully admit to this, I have a fear of being thrown. This is not the greatest fear to have when taking a Judo class…because it’s pretty much inevitable. This is also, more or less, the reason why it took me 25 years to take Judo (even though my father has been trying to get me to sign up since I can remember). Sigh. Throwing people is fine by me…it’s just the sudden stop at the end after you’re thrown yourself. No thanks. So yeah, that’s definitely something I need to work on. In the mean time I’ll be practicing this.

Because, omg, wtf just happened there?
