When You Don’t Have A Valentine…

“The Love™ Team,” by pixietart
Who cares? I’m very tired of all the parties entitled “Fuck Love” and the bitter attitude of individuals who aren’t in relationships. Seriously, who cares? It is a silly holiday, anyway. So instead of being mopey that you’re single, that you’re in a LDR, or something else along those lines, why not take advantage of everyone’s la la attitude and go out and do something fun?
I propose five alternatives to sitting by yourself and listening to The Postal Service.
- Get a Valentine and shower them with affection (and gifts). My boyfriend is going to be at some silly Lisp conference in Chicago and my best friend is single. See how this works? We’re getting one another valentines, flowers, and going to the movies together. Aw.
- 2. Go to the movies with some friends. Odds are there are numerous individuals who share your depressed and bitter feelings. Thankfully, this is the time of year when tons of feel good movies are released. Get your sorry selves to the movie theater for some romantic comedy action (or Godzilla destruction, whatever suits your fancy). Whoo ha!
- Take advantage of all the post Valentine’s day candy sales. Mmm 3lb bags of M&Ms and giant candy hearts at 50% off! Tasty!
- Buy yourself some flowers. OR even better buy yourself a flowering plant. It’s a little more work, but your house will smell lovely even longer. I especially like jasmine, but gardenias and lilies are other alternative (there are lot more options if you’re okay with a fragrance free plant).
- Throw a party. Why not? Parties are an excellent excuse to eat tasty high caloric food and indulge in a cocktail or two. Have each guest bring a friend as well, it’s a great way to meet new people.
Lastly, remember that you are not the only single person out there. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that more than 80 million people spend Valentine’s Day alone…and it’s certainly not guaranteed that those individuals who are in relationships are all that happy anyway.
